  1. Methanol (9CH³OH) is the simplest of the 
  2. alcohols. It can be made by the dry 
  3. distillation of wood (hence it is also 
  4. known as wood alcohol), but is usually made 
  5. from coal or natural gas. When pure, it is a 
  6. colourless, flammable liquid with a pleasant 
  7. odour, and is highly poisonous.
